The Rookie: The Main Characters, Ranked By Intelligence

All of the characters in The Rookie bring something special to the table. They have different jobs within the LAPD, and most of them are well-suited for their skill set. Knowing how to handle themselves on the streets is a must, as is being able to remain calm and retain information under duress.

The group's unique talents are what makes them work so well as a team. None of them lack intelligence, making it a bit hard to place them. However, there are some characters who are more intuitive than others and can piece together the necessary information to crack a case.

10 Jackson West

Jackson is smart and there's no questioning it. He hatched a plan to expose Stanton for his racism, a cop that had been getting away with his brutality and hatefulness for decades, and took him down.

But compared to the other characters, Jackson hasn't had quite as many opportunities to prove himself when it comes to the investigation side of things. He can be rash and he often doesn't think things through before he does them. It's not that he's isn't clever, as much as it is that his strengths are in other areas.

9 Wade Grey

Grey is a strict, but fair sergeant who cares deeply about his squad. He spends most of his time in the station, so fans don't get to see him in the field all too often. Grey is good at delegating and getting the right people on the right cases. He's a natural leader, and he does so through example.

He listens to his officer's concerns and is quick to act when something needs to be done. Grey wants to make real change, but right now, that requires being in the office more than being on the streets.

8 Tim Bradford

Tim Bradford is one of the smartest characters in the show. The problem is that he lets his emotions interfere with his ability to make rational decisions. As a training officer, he teaches his rookies to remain calm and assess the situation. This isn't a notion he can't always follow himself. Tim is excellent under pressure, but when a case gets personal, he's likely to go rogue.

When Lucy went missing he was running on pure emotion rather than anything else. He even considered hiding drugs to protect his ex-wife, which is just one of the many things he did to keep her safe. Tim's feelings often have an effect on his judgment, and although it sometimes pays off, he's a wild card.

7 Nyla Harper

Because of all the time she spent doing undercover work, Nyla has the most street smarts out of anyone on the squad. She knows how to handle almost any situation that comes up, and if she doesn't, she'll figure it out.

Nyla is a calm presence in the face of danger, and she weighs the pros and cons of a situation before doing anything rash. Sitting down and cracking cases isn't her area of expertise, but she thinks quickly on her feet.

6 Wesley Evers

Wesley may be Angela's fiance, but that's not the reason why everyone goes to him if they need a lawyer. He's calculating, well-educated in his field, and despite being engaged to a cop, he holds police accountable for their actions.

Wesley is an incredible defense attorney that any criminal would want on their side. He's able to get his clients released even when all the odds are stacked against them. When it comes to matters of the court, Wesley is a force to be reckoned with.

5 Angela Lopez

It's surprising that it took Angela until Season 3 to earn the position of detective. She's easily the most intelligent out of the training officers, and getting to the bottom of a mystery is what she does best.

Angela is multi-talented and can thrive in any environment or area within the force. She can think her way through a situation just as well as she can fight her way through. When her boss attempted to write off a break-in, Angela dug deeper into it and solved an entire murder investigation.

4 Nick Armstrong

Nick spent months outsmarting everyone in the LAPD. No one, including viewers, suspected anything was off with him. He was kind, trustworthy, and risked his life for the main characters on more than one occasion.

The only reason he was found out, was because Nolan caught him killing a fellow rookie from the academy. But even that didn't stop him. Nick managed to frame Nolan so well that it's almost unrealistic that he didn't get away with it.

3 Rosalind Dyer

While technically not a main character, Rosalind has been the main catalyst of essentially everything since the second season of the show. She's been charged with the murder of seven people, and more bodies are likely to pop up as the series goes on.

Rosalind even managed to have Lucy buried alive while she sat under constant surveillance in her jail cell. Everyone always goes to her for answers, since she's the one most likely to have them. Her intricate plans are brutal and terrifying, but they're also genius.

2 Lucy Chen

Lucy is the most well-rounded character in The Rookie. Whether it comes to general knowledge, book-smarts, or police work, there's nothing she can't handle. Lucy was able to pull off an undercover operation against one of the most dangerous crime syndicates in the state because of her natural talent and chemistry knowledge.

She was also the only victim to survive Rosalind Dyer's murder plot by leaving behind a ring she knew Tim would recognize.

1 John Nolan

Nolan is so intelligent that it's often hard for viewers to naturally suspend their disbelief. He's a rookie in his first year of training who knows almost everything. He does have life experience in a wide variety of areas, which makes him good at connecting to perpetrators and talking them down.

Nolan is often able to crack cases before the detectives can, and it feels as though he's sometimes running the police force. He can get himself out of any situation, and when being held captive, Nolan communicated with his sergeant by using Morse Code.
