Why Spider-Man's Girlfriend Mary Jane Is Betraying Him For Mysterio

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Amazing Spider-Man #60

Why is Mary Jane going behind Spider-Man's back to work with Mysterio of all people? Amazing Spider-Man #60, written by Nick Spencer with art by Mark Bagley, brought Peter Parker and Mary Jane's relationship to its highest point in years. For the first time in a long time, the future is looking bright for Spider-Man and his perpetual love interest Mary Jane Watson. But Mary Jane has dark secrets lurking on the horizon that could doom her relationship with Peter Parker going forward.

Mary Jane has always dreamed of being an actress. Recently, she found herself with an unlikely ally: Quentin Beck aka Mysterio, an illusionist and one of Spider-Man's most persistent enemies. Under the guise of director Cage McKnight, Beck is making a biopic of his own villainous career, and has even cast MJ as his leading lady, as seen in the series The Amazing Mary Jane. Beck claims Mary Jane embodies a friend from his past whom he let down and now seeks to honor. Mary Jane agrees, but has kept all of this secret from Peter Parker. This in and of itself poses a serious relationship issue - but it could be getting worse.

Mysterio is one of several supervillains resurrected by the demonic Kindred, recently revealed to be Peter's best friend Harry Osborn, out for revenge. It stands to reason that Mysterio is another cog in Kindred's plan for vengeance on Spider-Man, and it's even more likely Mary Jane factors into all of this. Thus, by continuing her role in Mysterio's upcoming biopic, Mary Jane is complicit in whatever scheme he's hatching. Whatever the outcome, Mary Jane's secret will almost certainly damage her relationship with Peter, which probably remains Kindred's ultimate goal - to compromise those closest to Spider-Man.

This isn't to say that Mary Jane is completely in the dark. She seems to suspect Mysterio knows more than he's telling, particularly about Kindred. This brings up the possibility that she is, in fact, playing Mysterio. Amazing Mary Jane saw MJ building trust with Quentin Beck. In Amazing Spider-Man #60, Mary Jane tells Beck "...as your leading lady, I decided to take the lead on this one—." All of this points to the possibility that Mary Jane might be using their "creative partnership" to unearth more information on Kindred.

Of course, there's no guarantee Mary Jane's ploy will work. After all, it is Mysterio who urges caution, telling Mary Jane, "I know your intentions are good, but you know what they say . . . about the road to hell." As Nick Spencer's run on Amazing Spider-Man reaches a new chapter, the stakes have never been higher.
