Awkwafina Reveals Details About Her Shang-Chi Character Katy
Awkwafina is revealing details about her character Katy in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Fans got their first look at Awkafina's character in a trailer for Shang-Chi released today. Originally announced at the San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, where it was also announced that Simu Liu had been cast in the film's lead role, Shang-Chi would have been released by now if not for delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, Shang-Chi is currently set for a September release, and now its marketing campaign is officially underway.
Awkwafina, whose real name is Nora Lum, was previously cast in an undisclosed role, but now some details are beginning to emerge. Though she initially rose to prominence after one of her rap videos went viral on YouTube, Awkwafina began her film career with supporting roles in comedies like Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, Ocean's 8, Crazy Rich Asians, and Jumanji: The Next Level. She eventually landed a leading role in A24's comedy-drama The Farewell in 2019 and will now star in her biggest blockbuster yet in Marvel's Shang-Chi.
While much was previously unknown, Awkwafina reveals some details about her character in Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. First off, her character is named Katy and is a close friend and confidant of Shang-Chi, though she does not know much about him or why he is no longer in touch with his parents, according to EW. Here is what Awkwafina had to say directly about her character Katy:
She doesn't do a lot of the heavy lifting, but at the end of the day, she has a real heart, and she has a loyalty and dedication to her friendship with Shang-Chi. She's super brave.
Awkwafina may just be modest when she says Katy "doesn't do a lot of the heavy lifting" in Shang-Chi since her character features prominently in the trailer alongside Simu Liu. The two appear to be quite the duo, as the trailer shows them doing karaoke and having drinks together. But the trailer's action picks up when Shang-Chi begins kicking bad guys on a bus as Katy takes control of the wheel to help him save people. Although, Katy seems to be completely unaware of who Shang-Chi really is, asking, "Who are you?"
Shang Chi will feature a predominantly Asian cast with Liu and Awkwafina at the center, supported by another actor with a comedic background in Ronny Chieng, who also appears as a friend of Shang-Chi. The film will also star Tony Leung as the primary antagonist, The Mandarin, and another Crazy Rich Asians star, Michelle Yeoh, as Jiang Nan. While much about these characters is still unknown, including Awkwafina's Katy, fans will surely find out more before Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings arrives in theaters on September 3rd.
