Hawkeye Set Photos Reveal Best Look At Echo | Screen Rant
New Hawkeye set photos reveal the best look yet at Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez, a.k.a., Echo. Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will finally give Jeremy Renner's Clint Barton a chance to be the star of a project. Instead of a Hawkeye movie, Barton's story will be told on Disney+. The series will follow his life after Avengers: Endgame, include flashbacks to his time as Ronin, and introduce his sharpshooting successor: Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld).
Marvel Studios is also slated to introduce another Hawkeye replacement with Maya Lopez. The deaf Native American character from Marvel Comics is better known as Echo, a highly-skilled assassin with mimic powers who eventually became a hero. Marvel cast a newcomer, Alaqua Cox, to play the role in Hawkeye, and she's been busy filming her scenes for the last several months. While Renner and Steinfeld have repeatedly been spotted in their superhero suits, most of the other cast members have been relatively well-hidden from paparazzi.
This has changed thanks to a new batch of Hawkeye set photos shared by Just Jared. The photos give fans the best look at Alaqua Cox on set as Maya Lopez/Echo. She's shown in an all-black outfit next to a motorcycle, but Echo noticeably does not have the character's traditional handprint marking on her face. The late-night scene also includes Fra Fee as Kazi aka The Clown, who is shown speaking with Echo. Check out the photos below:
This new look at Echo in Hawkeye could be quite revealing about her role in the series. The absence of the white handprint on her face could be a sign that Echo's father has not yet died. In the comics, he places a bloody hand on her face right before he dies. She often then paints a handprint in the same location to remind herself of what she's lost. The comics saw Wilson Fisk, a.k.a., Kingpin frame Daredevil for killing her father, but that part of her origin might be delayed for the MCU's purposes. With Zahn McClarnon set to play Maya's father in Hawkeye, though, the event could come at some point later on.
Pairing Echo with The Clown is also an intriguing revelation about Hawkeye. He's the one hired to kill Clint Barton in the comics, but Echo doesn't have a role to play in Matt Fraction's story that the Disney+ is largely based around. She may have also been hired to take out the sharpshooter. Echo might also seek out The Clown with the hopes of teaming up, especially if Hawkeye is framed for killing her father.
In any case, these teases for Echo's appearance and role in Hawkeye will only be the beginning of her MCU story. Marvel Studios is already reportedly in early development on a Hawkeye spinoff Disney+ show for Echo. This clearly means there is more to her story that has to be resolved after her debut. As for what exactly the Echo series will be about, fans will have to wait to see how her story concludes in Hawkeye first.
