Minecraft's Totems Of The Undying Can Even Revive Zombies
A player discovered that zombies in Minecraft could use Totems of Undying just like a regular player can. Despite entering its first alpha test over a decade ago, Minecraft has continued to be one of the most popular games ever made. Constant updates from Mojang have transformed what was once a simple survival game into a monolith of both content and creativity. With these updates, new items, events, and even whole regions are added to existing areas for players to discover and experiment with.
The Totem of Undying was added along with the Exploration Update in 2016, which added new mobs, items, and biome features. The totem, which can only be used if held in the off-hand slot of the player, are dropped by Evoker Illagers and will revive the holder if their health drops to zero. Totems of Undying disappear upon usage, making them the last gasp device rather than a free revive. Instead of just refilling the health gauge, the totem will restore one HP, remove all existing status effects, and adds 40 to 45 seconds of Regeneration II, 40 seconds of Fire Resistance II, and 5 seconds of Absorption II to allow players to escape and heal.
Reddit user mining_moron discovered that zombies could pick up Totems of Undying and use them if slain. A video the user-posted shows them dropping a Totem of Undying in front of a zombie and the zombie picking it up after walking over it. The same effects (not the animation) used for the revival on a player are shown occurring for the zombie, even though it dies after another swipe of mining_moron’s sword. It is inferred that the same effects added to the player are also added to the zombie. According to the game’s wiki page, any mob in Minecraft capable of holding an item in its hand or mouth can use the revival effect.
This means that any player in their world could get a Totem of Undying, accidentally drop it, and an Enderman could scoop it up. A terrifying ordeal considering that the Enderman is already elusive and dangerous as it is. Considering the updates that Minecraft is still receiving, like the upcoming Caves & Cliffs update coming later this year, it would be hard to think this functionality won’t be expounded upon. Minecraft Dungeons has its own totems that could be brought over to the original game as well.
With the functionality of mobs holding items, more challenging enemies could start making their way into Minecraft. Imagine a group of armored zombies walking out of a cave with enchanted swords and Totems of Undying. Regardless if Mojang uses the feature more or not, there are sure to be more hidden functions from mobs to find that players haven’t encountered just yet.
