What A Hitman TV Series Could Look Like, According To The Developers
In a recent interview, the director of Hitman 3 revealed what he would do for a television adaptation of the series. The character has been adapted for the silver screen twice, being played by two different actors, but both movies were considered to be giant flops. The two films only reinforced the stigma against video game movies.
A few years ago, it was announced Hitman would be getting a series on Hulu in association with Fox. The show would be created by John Wick creator Derek Kolstad but very few details about what the show would be like ever trickled out. It's 2021 now and the show hasn't seen any movement, but it's unclear if it's actually dead or if Disney is trying to figure out what to do with it.
In an interview with Screen Rant, Hitman 3 director Mattias Engström pitched his idea for what he'd like to see a Hitman TV show look like. It's a bit of an unconventional approach but an intriguing one. "We've talked about it over the years as well. Like how would this translate onto the screen? I kind of liked the idea of having each episode [be] its own thing where there is a party and somewhere you're following some characters and in the background there's someone who hunts, but you don't know, you're not really following Agent 47 or the hitman. They're in there somewhere and you're trying to find them as you watch the characters that the episode is about, you know what I mean? There's like a monster somewhere that is going to peak out."
Whether or not this comes from any ideas that have actually been floated towards the adaptation is unclear. It would be a great way to use the Hitman IP in a new way. Agent 47 has had some characterization in recent games but is largely a blank slate. The games revolve around the creative kills, the dark humor, and a lack of restrictions in gameplay. It's a hard thing to juggle in a 40 - 60 minute TV series.
By flipping perspectives and turning it into something where the viewer invests in a new character each episode, who will inevitably die by the end, there's a more interesting story to be told. Hitman has a story but making it more of an anthology series that creates suspense and mystery would certainly make it more compelling. This would also make it far more accessible, allowing viewers to jump in whenever they want without losing much context. Whether or not Agent 47 ever returns to live-action remains to be seen but for now, the character is taking a rest in video games. Developer IO Interactive has moved towards Project 007, which aims to be a trilogy of James Bond games.
