Recasting The Characters of Scrubs (If It Was Made Today)
Though it does not have quite the same legacy as some other shows of its era, Scrubs is a series that is beloved by many fans. The medical comedy-drama took a surreal, funny, and sometimes heartbreaking look at the lives of the people who work at Sacred Heart Hospital.
The series stood out from other hospital-set shows thanks to its unique characters who were often charming and complex. The main cast did a wonderful job bringing these characters to life for its nine-season run, but it's fascinating to think about which actors would have filled those same roles if the show was made today.
10 Dr. Bob Kelso: Eugene Levy
As Sacred Heart's Chief of Medicine, Dr. Bob Kelso is the overseer of everything in the hospital and the one the other doctors need to answer to. He is seen as a bit of a self-centered and uncompassionate man. However, he also has a goofy sense of humor and a softer side that is rarely seen.
Eugene Levy is a comedic actor who has been around for decades, but more recently he is known as the star of the hit Canadian comedy Schitt's Creek. Levy is often able to play those stern and unmoving people in power positions while still being able to be funny and likable.
9 Nurse Roberts: Vivica A. Fox
Laverne Roberts is one of the nurses at the hospital and one of the most intimidating personalities that work there. She is a no-nonsense person who holds strong Christian beliefs and is not afraid to voice her disappointment in those she works with, including her superiors.
Vivica A. Fox is an actor who is excellent at bringing that strong personality to her roles. She is a master at playing those kinds of characters who stand their ground and refuse to budge. It is easy to imagine her being that domineering force over the others.
8 Todd: Kristen Schaal
Todd, or "The Todd" as he refers to himself, is one of the most talented surgeons at the hospital. Despite his medical skills, he often comes off as immature and slightly dumb. He has an obnoxious frat-boy attitude and often makes inappropriate sexual comments about any woman he comes across.
While such a character might be too off-putting nowadays, casting Kristen Schaal as a gender-swapped Ted might fix this problem. Schaal can play those characters who are annoying but in a funny way that makes them bearable. She also has experience playing sexually aggressive characters, as seen in Flight of the Conchords and 30 Rock.
7 Ted: Mark Proksch
Ted is the overworked and unsuccessful lawyer for Sacred Heart. He is the ultimate sad-sack who is regularly insulted and demeaned by others, thus adding to his own low self-esteem. While this might seem depressing, it helps to make Ted one of the funniest characters on the show.
Mark Proksch is a hilarious comedic actor currently seen doing amazing work in What We Do in the Shadows. That performance shows his talent for playing those hilarious pathetic and boring characters that are somehow so entertaining.
6 Carla: Gina Rodriguez
The head nurse at Sacred Heart is Carla Espinosa. She is a very professional person which often makes her seem stern and intimidating, but she also acts as a mother figure to the young interns. She eventually forms a relationship with Turk, further showing her warm and funny side.
Gina Rodriguez is another actor who has that strong and tough quality to her. She could pull off this character that commands attention yet can also be sweet, funny, and loving.
5 Janitor: Jared Keeso
One of the most bizarre and entertaining characters in the show is the Janitor. His name remains in question for the entire series and he has a definite standoffish attitude. He has a very dry sense of humor and enjoys insulting J.D. and pulling pranks on him whenever he can.
As the star of the Canadian comedy Letterkenny, Jared Keeso has proven himself to be a hilarious tough guy. On that show, he is the king of vicious insults and has a similar quality that makes it hard to get to know him.
4 Turk: Justice Smith
Christopher Turk is the best friend of J.D. and one of the hospital's most talented surgeons. He is a very competitive and energetic person in every aspect of his life and also loves to goof around with his friend.
Justice Smith is an up-and-coming actor who brings a high energy to a lot of his roles. While his characters tend to be more neurotic than Turk, he could certainly make the character as wild and funny as he was in the original show.
3 Elliot: Geraldine Viswanathan
Elliot Reid is one of the most promising interns at the hospital and an eventual love interest for J.D. She is a very professional person who takes her job seriously and is very driven. However, she is also quite awkward in social situations.
Geraldine Viswanathan is another young actor who is destined for big things. She has that quality where she can play those characters that get a task in mind and will not stop until it is accomplished. She is also a very gifted comedic actor.
2 Dr. Perry Cox: Walton Goggins
Dr. Cox is a senior attending physician at Sacred Heart and the overseer of all the interns. He is shown to be an incredibly tough leader who especially targets J.D. with regular insults and calling out his mistakes. Yet Cox is an excellent mentor over time. He is also very caring towards his patients and hilariously rude to everyone else.
That kind of funny yet scary quality is something Walton Goggins can pull off expertly. He can be absolutely hysterical when given the chance but always keeps a level of authority about him.
1 J.D: Alex Wolff
The main character of the series is John Dorian, aka J.D.. He is the sensitive and caring intern making his way through a career at Sacred Heart. He is also a bit of an awkward guy who is prone to surreal fantasies surrounding his workplace.
Alex Wolff is known for some intense roles, but he can also play the awkward young man quite well. He has a nervous energy to him and seems like the type of person who would daydream about these elaborate things inside J.D's head.
